Good afternoon, Parents, I apologize for the delay in notification but in the spirit of transparency, we wanted to inform you of an incident in a classroom yesterday. A student brought a kitchen knife to school, which was reported by classmates who saw it. The substitute teacher promptly alerted administration who confiscated the knife after being alerted by the classmates. While no immediate threat was indicated, we are grateful for the classmates who reported the incident. The student in question will be sanctioned according to the Student Code of Conduct. Parents, please remind your student of the potential danger and consequences of bringing such items to school. It takes all of us working together to ensure safe campuses and I appreciate the support you provide to McDermott daily. If you have questions, please feel free to contact my office. Sincerely, Pam Dial pam.dial@lrsd.org

Reading in the Rock at McDermott Elementary! ✨📚
McDermott Elementary is so proud to participate in Reading in the Rock, a wonderful book distribution supported by the City of Little Rock and LRSD!
Before the holidays our students were excited to choose five books of their very own, plus one additional book generously provided by the Smith Memorial Book Fund. While waiting for their turn to select books, the students built a snowman ornament. Students were also given a cool backpack to take the books home. Having books they can keep helps build a love of reading and gives students the opportunity to read anytime, anywhere.

Students have been encouraged to log their reading and return their reading logs after the holiday break. Students who turn in their logs will earn fun prizes as we continue to celebrate reading at McDermott!
Thank you to our community partners for supporting literacy and helping us inspire a lifelong love of reading in our students.

A promotional graphic for Arkansas School Choice from the Little Rock School District. The left side has a dark blue background with yellow and white text that reads “Arkansas School Choice.” Below it says, “Live outside the Little Rock School District boundaries, and wish to apply to one of our amazing schools?” A boxed headline reads, “LRSD has the best opportunities and experiences available for your student. Don’t let them miss out!” Under the headline is a bulleted list that includes: medical career pathways with hospital partnerships; new, state of the art facilities; national and international competition opportunities; captivating research opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; early childhood programs led by certified teachers, pre kindergarten; hands on experience with emerging technologies; inclusive programs for special education; award winning arts programs; hands on leadership and service opportunities with an extensive community partnership network; and championship sports and extracurriculars. At the bottom left is the website address, spelled out as w w w dot L R S D dot o r g. The right side of the graphic is a collage of photos showing diverse students participating in classroom learning, science experiments, arts, athletics, performances, graduations, and group activities. Over the collage is text that reads, “More opportunities for kids.” Below the collage is the Little Rock School District torch logo and the words “Little Rock School District.” In the bottom right corner is a yellow box with black text that reads, “Deadline May 1, 2026.”
Reading in the Rock Book Distribution started off with lots of smiles today! Thank you to all the partners that have made it possible for our students to go home this week with a pile of books! #ReadingInTheRock #readingrocks
